THE RT. REVD. DR. PROBAL KANTO DUTTA BISHOP, DIOCESE OF DURGAPUR ELECTED DEPUTY MODERATOR, CNI SYNOD
At the recently concluded 16th Ordinary Meeting of the Synod of the Church of North India in New Delhi, The Rt. Revd. Dr. Probal Kanto Dutta, Bishop, Diocese of Durgapur was duly elected Deputy Moderator, CNI Synod for the triennium 2017-2020.
The ‘Seven year drought’ of the Diocese of Durgapur ended on September l0, 2003, the day Revd. Probal Kanto Dutta was elected as the Bishop of the Diocese of Durgapur and was installed on September 21, 2003. Since then the Diocese had gone through tremendous hardships, yet the perseverance and prayers of the members opened a way for leadership.
Bishop Dutta born on December 06, 1960, after graduation joined the Bishops College to procure a B.D. degree. He secured a post graduate degree in Mission Studies from Birmingham University, UK. He was ordained a presbyter in the Diocese of Calcutta in March l992.
He was the National Programme Secretary, of Vigil India Movement – A Human Rights Organization. He was also the Chief Coordinator, Synodical Board of Social Services. Under his leadership as the Chief Coordinator, the CNI-SBSS has achieved many a milestones. A committed, dynamic, humble person, Bishop Dutta is someone who can lead a group to its utmost success. On the Synod level, he was the Chairperson, Synodical Board of Health Services and Chairperson, Stewardship Committee. He was also the member of the CNI Synod Executive Committee.
He turned the falling Diocese of Durgapur in to a vibrant congregation with a social outlook. He worked with the local tribal population to ring about the growth and development in their socioeconomic status. Since he became the Bishop of the Diocese, Anti Human trafficking is a main focus of the Diocese. Through AHT many lives have been transformed and given a hope for a better tomorrow. Through his vision and approach, the Diocese is working with several international partner churches to prevent cross border trafficking in Malda and to provide education to the slum children in the Diocese.
He feels that “God chose him with a purpose to lead the Diocese, with the help, and Guidance of the Holy Spirit and with the help of the Diocese members he was able to end the drought in the diocese and make it a “Khushhali” diocese.
Today the Diocese of Durgapur is a role model diocese, which has a very strong Women’s Fellowship and Youth Ministry. The Diocese is totally involved in the upliftment of the poor and marginalized. The Diocese is also first in CNI to have a full-fledged ministry for the victims of trafficking.
