Synodical Board of Health Services

The Synodical Board of Health Services (SBHS), Church of North India (CNI) is promoting and carrying out appropriate medical services and training, Community Health Work and the diffusion of useful medical knowledge in the spirit of service and sacrifice for the benefit of all people irrespective of caste, creed, community or nationality. The SBHS covers the whole of India except the four southern States. It constitutes the largest network of health care institutions in India with 60 hospitals and several health related programmes that are functioning through the eight Regional Boards of Health Services. The main programmes of The SBHS are-

The Community Health Programme is a community based sustainable Peoples Programme reaching out to the most vulnerable communities at the grass roots with main focus on women and children. The Community Health programme is successfully going on under different Regional Boards of The SBHS-CNI. The primary focus of these projects is to enable the communities to become aware on various issues related to Mother and Child Health, pulse polio immunization, means of livelihood, education, substance abuse, female feticide, malaria, tuberculosis, unhealthy environment etc. Self Help Groups are in progress and various Income Generation Programmes are bringing results. ‘AGRASAR’ (‘ahead’) Handloom Project of the Central Regional Board of Health Services (CRBHS) is functioning well at Christian Hospital, Mandleshwar, Madhya Pradesh where famous Maheshwari saris, shawls, bed sheets and salwar suits are being made (They can also be made to order).

Newer programmes of Community participation in health care are also being launched in collaboration with US (previously the United Society for Propagation of the Gospel). An initiative labeled ‘SALT’ is being used to engage local Christian Communities in support of Mission Hospital programmes.

Nursing programme was established in 1994 to improve and Coordinate Nursing Education and Nursing Service. At present there are 60 Mission Hospitals, 20 Colleges for B.Sc. Nursing, 1 College for M.Sc. Nursing, 1 College for Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing, 18 General Nursing Midwifery Courses and 4 Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery courses. It is a great honour for the Church of North India that with the help of The Synodical Board of Health Services, Calcutta Diocese along with the Calcutta Diocesan Trust Association has been able to establish the Sister Florence College of Nursing at Oxford Mission Campus, Kolkata. The SBHS is also sponsoring children from impoverished backgrounds for nursing training, obtaining scholarships for such children.

The SBHS CNI encourages and nurtures the members of Christian Community in training for services in Healing Ministry of CNI. The medical students, Doctors, nursing students and the allied health sciences students are sponsored in two Medical Colleges namely Christian Medical College, Vellore and Christian Medical College, Ludhiana and in the Schools of nursing and allied health attached to Mission Hospitals of CNI.
